Greetings From An Autism Parent
Greetings From An Autism Parent
Hi, to parents of children on the spectrum.
chalcedony Monday 19 December 2005

I'm chalcedony, owner of #autistichat, the live chat that the
'chat here' window goes to.

My experience is as a mother to several children who, with or without
diagnoses, are on the spectrum, my husband and I are too.

May I recommend the book "Disability is Natural" by Kathie Snow?
www.disabilityisnatural.com/book.htm

Much about parenting today is focused on "Babies Can't Wait"
and ABA and Therapies.

People forget that many of us never went to therapy and turned out
to be very civilized human beings. I'm sure my dear departed friend
Patty Clark would agree.

Patty had primary Autism, I have Asperger's Syndrome. I learned
to talk early and could sing, dance and recite poetry at 3.
I'm a mother, wife, creative artist and have held full time
jobs, with responsibilities.

Your children with differences WILL grow up, and if you learn
to be patient and gentle, and protect them from the bullies and the
outside world, and take the time to enable them to learn, you will be
doing them HUGE favors.
The more 'cushioning' you can provide the better. Our kids may
always be the last one picked and the one bullies pick on.
Teachers won't understand and friends either. It's life.

The less stress a person lives with, the longer life he or she will have.

The Bible says "parents do not exasperate your children".

So often we want our children to fit our ideas and do things as
society wants them to do them. Make sure that your expectations
are appropriate for THAT child, in THIS situation. Don't expect
your son to 'act like a man', he is only a little boy for such
a short time!

ENJOY the things they do and say. LISTEN to them. Watch and look.
Don't stop the explorations. Let your children lead you.

Share your life with your children.

Linda
